The older core near the bazaar and the melon market is where the town actually lives, with guesthouses above the kebab alleys and a ten-minute walk to the evening food stalls. I now treat them as different nights: if I am westbound toward Turpan and Urumqi at dawn, I take the station edge and point the car at the on-ramp; if I have arrived from Gansu and want a real meal and a wander, I pay a little more for the core and walk. Hami works year-round; May-October is the comfortable window, with summer highs that demand working AC and a hotel that admits it has it. Book three to five days ahead in shoulder months and a week around the two big holidays; walk-in rooms are common otherwise. After booking online, add the hotel on WeChat to confirm parking and an early breakfast, because the corridor crossing eats the morning and you will want food before 6 a.m. One night is the norm for the transit stop; add a second only if the Kumul grassland or the canyon is a real plan, not a passing thought.
