Koktokay (Keketuohai): Gem of the Altai

Tucked into the Altai mountains of northern Xinjiang, Koktokay (Keketuohai, 可可托海) is a national geopark of granite spires, a turquoise river gorge, and a history of gem and rare-metal mining that once made it a state secret. It’s quieter and more rugged than nearby Kanas, and for travelers who want the Altai without the crowds, it’s the smarter stop. If you’re on the northern Altai drive, Koktokay is the rugged counterpoint to Kanas’ postcard calm.

What it is

Koktokay means “blue river bend” in Kazakh, and the Irtysh River does exactly that here, cutting a deep gorge through strange granite formations. The park is a UNESCO Global Geopark — granite peaks (the “Shenzhong” bell-shaped mountain is the icon), rapids, forests, and a mining heritage that’s now part of the story you can visit.

When to go

  • Summer (June–August): green, accessible, pleasant — peak visiting season.
  • Autumn (late September): golden birch against granite — spectacular and less busy.
  • Winter: snowy and stark, but limited access; the winter driving guide applies if you attempt it.
  • The best-time guide has the wider window.

What to see and do

  • The granite peaks — hike or shuttle to the viewpoints; the bell-mountain is unmissable.
  • The Irtysh gorge — walk the rim; the water is an impossible blue.
  • The mining heritage site — the old rare-metal mine (No. 3 mine) is a Cold War-era curiosity turned exhibit.
  • Forest and meadow walks — the Altai birch and wildflower country.
  • Photography — granite, river, and autumn color combine beautifully.

Getting there

Koktokay is near Fuyun County, northeast of Urumqi and east of the Kanas/Burqin area — a few hours’ drive. It pairs naturally with the Altai–Kanas loop: do Kanas/Hemu, then swing east to Koktokay before returning south. An SUV’s comfort helps on the approach roads (see the vehicle guide).

Why it’s special

Kanas gets the fame; Koktokay gets the character. It’s less polished, more geological, and far quieter — you can stand at a granite viewpoint and hear nothing but the river. For travelers who like their scenery with a sense of discovery, it’s the better half of the Altai.

Practical notes

  • Tickets and shuttles: the park uses a shuttle system; buy at the gate and plan around it.
  • Altitude: moderate (1,200–1,800 m) — easy.
  • Facilities: basic; bring water, snacks, layers.
  • Stay: Fuyun or the park gateway has lodging; book ahead in summer.

Final word

Koktokay is the Altai’s rugged secret — granite, a blue river, and a mining past, all without the crowds. Add it to your northern loop, stand at the gorge, and hear the quiet that the famous lakes have lost.
