Seven days in the Ili Valley taught me more about Xinjiang than a month on the G30: one loop took me from a Baroque octagon city to a lake at 2,000 metres to a grassland where the road just kept climbing.

The Ili Valley is the green heart of Xinjiang — a wedge of alpine meadow, vineyard and orchard fed by the Ili River, ringed by the Tianshan, and reachable as a self-drive loop out of Urumqi or straight off a flight to Yining. A 7-day loop here beats the classic north-south dash for first-timers who want grass, not just desert: Yining as a base, Sayram Lake and the Guozi Gorge to the north, Nalati and the Tekes grasslands to the east, and Zhaosu’s blossom and Karajol to the south. This itinerary is built for a rental car, paced at 2–4 hours of driving a day, and tuned so the shuttle-park days and the open-road days alternate. Here is the day-by-day.

Day 1 — Urumqi to Yining (the long transfer)

Fly or drive to Yining; if driving, the G30 run from Urumqi is about 680 km and a full day, so most travellers fly in and rent the car in Yining to save the transfer. Settle in Yining, walk the evening bazaar, and buy a bag of sangza and dried fruit for the loop. The Ili Valley’s food and the local wheat make the softest buns and the freshest liangpi you will eat all trip, so treat the first night as a calibration meal. Book the car rental before you land — Yining’s lots clear out in summer. Budget an easy first night; the loop starts fresh in the morning, and a rested driver on the G218 matters more than an extra town on day one.

  • Fly to Yining, rent the car there
  • Evening bazaar; stock sangza + dried fruit
  • Rest; loop starts day 2

Day 2 — Sayram Lake and the Guozi Gorge

North from Yining on the G30 to Sayram Lake, the high alpine lake at 2,070 m. Park at the gate and take the ring shuttle around the 90 km shore, then drop south through the Guozi Gorge (also called the果子沟), a forested canyon on the old Silk Road that is a stop in itself. Sleep in a lakeside cabin or back in Bortala. This is a shuttle day, so the car rests while the bus does the ring; keep the driving to the transfer only. The light on Sayram in the morning is the payoff — be at the gate for the first bus. Driving distances today are short (Yining to Sayram ~150 km), leaving time for the gorge walk.

  • G30 north to Sayram (2,070 m)
  • Ring shuttle, then Guozi Gorge south
  • Short drive; sleep Bortala or lakeside

Day 3 — Yining to Nalati Grassland

East on the G218 to Nalati, the showpiece grassland where the bus climbs to the sky meadow and the river valley. It is a half-day bus loop, so arrive mid-morning, ride the lines, and walk the boardwalks. The drive Yining → Nalati is about 260 km and scenic the whole way, along the Ili River and into the Tianshan foothills. Sleep in Nalati town or a nearby courtyard stay. This is where the loop earns its name — green to the horizon, with herders and yurts you can visit. Alternate the shuttle day with an open-road day tomorrow so the bus clock never fights the driving clock.

  • G218 east to Nalati (~260 km)
  • Half-day shuttle to sky meadow
  • Sleep Nalati town

Day 4 — Tekes and the Bagua city

South to Tekes, the famous octagonal ‘Bagua’ city laid out on the eight trigrams, gateway to the Karajol grassland. The city itself is a photo stop — you cannot get lost because the radial roads all lead back to the centre — and from here the road climbs to Karajol, a high meadow dotted with flowers in summer. About 70 km separates Nalati and Tekes, an easy morning. Sleep in Tekes; it is a practical base with dog-welcoming courtyards and a good night market. The Bagua layout is the one sight you cannot see from the car, so walk the centre ring at dusk when the light is soft and the grid is obvious from the viewing mound.

  • Nalati → Tekes (~70 km)
  • Walk the octagonal centre at dusk
  • Sleep Tekes; Karajol next

Day 5 — Zhaosu blossom and the apricot orchards

South from Tekes to Zhaosu, the orchard and grassland county famous for its late-March apricot blossom and its wide green basin. In spring the white orchards are the draw; in summer the basin is a sea of hay and the Karajol road is open. About 60 km, an easy drive. Sleep in Zhaosu or push west to the Tekes River camps. This day pairs with Nowruz if you time the loop to late March — the blossom and the feast land together. Budget-wise Zhaosu is cheap; a clean county hotel runs 160–260 yuan, and the food is the valley’s best value.

  • Tekes → Zhaosu (~60 km)
  • Apricot blossom in spring, green basin in summer
  • County hotel 160–260 yuan

Day 6–7 — loop back via Yining and fly out

Wind west back to Yining (Zhaosu → Yining ~180 km) for a final bazaar run, a last bowl of herbal liangpi, and the car return. Day 7 is buffer: a late morning at the Yining markets, the vehicle returned, and a flight out, or — if you drove up — the 680 km G30 push back to Urumqi split with a Turpan overnight. The budget for the loop runs roughly 350–550 yuan a day all-in for car, fuel, parks and a mid-range room for two; the shuttle passes and the Sayram ticket are the only fixed extras. Seven days is tight but complete; ten gives the southern Pamir add-on, but that is a different loop.

  • Zhaosu → Yining (~180 km), return car
  • Day 7 buffer: bazaar, fly or G30 back
  • ~350–550 yuan/day all-in for two
