Bosten Lake: Xinjiang’s Largest Inland Lake

Everyone rushes to the alpine lakes — Sayram, Kanas — and misses the biggest one. Bosten Lake, near Korla in the south, is Xinjiang’s largest inland lake, a vast, shallow, reed-fringed expanse fed by the melting Tianshan. It’s a different kind of beautiful: not the teal drama of the north, but a wide, bird-rich wetland with lotus in summer and a calm that the headline sites have lost to crowds. If you’re on the Turpan–Korla or Urumqi–Kashgar leg, it’s an easy, rewarding detour.

What it is

Bosten (博斯腾湖) is a freshwater lake fed by the Peacock River system, with enormous reed beds (a “reed sea,” 芦苇海) that are themselves a landmark. It’s both a scenic area and a working fishery — you’ll see lotus in summer, flocks of migratory birds in spring and autumn, and the occasional fishing boat.

When to go

  • Summer (June–August): lotus bloom across the shallows — the signature image.
  • Spring & autumn: best for birds and mild weather.
  • Winter: cold and quiet; some areas limit access.
  • The best-time guide has the seasonal context.

What to do

  • Boat rides on the open water (seasonal).
  • Reed-bed walks — the “reed sea” is surprisingly vast and photogenic.
  • Birdwatching — migratory species in season; bring binoculars.
  • Lotus viewing in summer — pad-covered shallows with the Tianshan behind.
  • Fresh fish — the lake’s catch is a local menu highlight.

Getting there

Bosten is ~20–30 km from Korla, which sits on the G30/G3012. Easy half-day from Korla; pair it with a Korla overnight on a southern drive. Fuel and services are simple in Korla (our fuel guide covers payment).

Why it’s worth the stop

The famous lakes are spectacular but busy. Bosten is where you get a Xinjiang lake to yourself — wide water, rustling reeds, and birds instead of tour groups. It’s the antidote to the itinerary grind, and a reminder that the province’s waters come in more than one flavor.

Final word

Bosten Lake is the big, quiet one — Xinjiang’s largest inland water, rich in reeds and birds and lotus, and free of the crowds that chase the famous peaks. Detour from Korla, breathe the wetland air, and see the province’s water from a different angle.
