Bayinbuluke is the largest alpine wetland in Xinjiang and one of the few places where you can watch nine suns reflected in a curve of river.
This 4-day loop covers Korla, Bayinbuluke, back to Korla, about 620 km in total. The sweet spot is June to September.

The route day by day
Day 1: Korla to Bayinbuluke (260 km, ~4 h)
Day 1 leaves Korla and reaches Bayinbuluke, roughly 260 km and about 4 hours behind the wheel. You will sleep in Bayinbuluke. On the way: climb the southern Tianshan; pass the snow line mid-drive. The final climb is high; take it slow if you feel the altitude.
Day 2: Bayinbuluke to Bayinbuluke scenic area (40 km, ~1.5 h)
Day 2 leaves Bayinbuluke and reaches Bayinbuluke scenic area, roughly 40 km and about 1.5 hours behind the wheel. You will sleep in Bayinbuluke. On the way: swan lake boardwalk; the nine-turn river viewpoint. Sunset at the nine-turn river is the headline shot.
Day 3: Bayinbuluke to Kaidu river stops (80 km, ~2 h)
Day 3 leaves Bayinbuluke and reaches Kaidu river stops, roughly 80 km and about 2 hours behind the wheel. You will sleep in Bayinbuluke. On the way: roadside herder camps; photo stops. Keep fuel above half; services are thin.
Day 4: Bayinbuluke to Korla (260 km, ~4 h)
Day 4 leaves Bayinbuluke and reaches Korla, roughly 260 km and about 4 hours behind the wheel. You will sleep in . On the way: return drive; drop the car. Refuel before leaving the scenic area.
Where to sleep
- Bayinbuluke (3 nights) – basic guesthouses near the gate; book ahead in July and August.
Best time to drive
June to September is best: the grassland is green, the swan lake is open, and the passes are clear of snow. The road over the Tianshan closes in deep winter.

Practical tips
- Book the scenic-area shuttle the day before.
- Pack warm layers; nights are cold even in July.
- Carry cash for small guesthouses.
- Never let the tank drop below half on remote roads. Fuel stations thin out sharply once you leave the main G30 corridor, and a few only take cash or UnionPay.
