Best time to drive
Spring and autumn are best; summer in Turpan is oppressively hot and winter is cold but clear.

Practical tips
- Summer heat in Turpan is extreme; do outdoor sites at dawn or dusk.
- Carry water; the basin is parched.
- Hami melons are a highlight in season.
- Never let the tank drop below half on remote roads. Fuel stations thin out sharply once you leave the main G30 corridor, and a few only take cash or UnionPay.
