Best time to drive
Spring and autumn avoid the basin’s extreme summer heat. The desert edge is accessible year-round but hottest mid-summer.

Practical tips
- Do outdoor sites at dawn or dusk in warm months.
- Carry water; the basin is parched.
- The Kumtagh is reachable as a day trip from Turpan.
- Never let the tank drop below half on remote roads. Fuel stations thin out sharply once you leave the main G30 corridor, and a few only take cash or UnionPay.
