An 8-Day Northern Xinjiang Itinerary: Lakes & Grasslands

Eight days is the sweet spot for the north: long enough to reach Kanas and back without a single rushed dawn, short enough that the trip stays sharp. I have run this loop twice and still find a new shade of blue in the lakes.

If you have a week and a car, point north. The 8-day Northern Xinjiang loop takes in Tianchi, the Dzungarian fringe, the Burqin-Kanas wonderland, and the Sayram-Yining green belt, a sweep of alpine lakes, grasslands and pine that is the most beautiful quarter of the region. Here is the day-by-day, with real distances and where to sleep.

The loop at a glance

This 8-day route runs roughly Urumqi to Tianchi, north to Karamay and the colourful Urho, on to Burqin and Kanas, then east to Sayram Lake and down into the Ili Valley, returning via the G30. Total driving is around 2,200 km, spread so no day exceeds about 400 km except the return haul. It favours the north’s water and mountains over the south’s deserts, which is the right call for a first big loop. The 7 day route is the trimmed version if you must cut a day; this one adds Kanas properly. Best season is June through September, with July and August busiest.

  • ~2,200 km, no day over ~400 km but the return
  • North water and mountains, not southern desert
  • Best Jun-Sep; Jul-Aug busiest

Days 1-2: Urumqi and Tianchi

Day 1 settles in Urumqi, sort the car, the documents, and an early night. Day 2 drives about 70 km east to Tianchi, the Heavenly Lake at ~1,900 m on the flank of Bogda, a half-day walk around the shore then back to the city or on toward Karamay. The Ili Valley itinerary fans out from here if you have more time, but for this loop keep moving north. Book Tianchi tickets ahead in peak season; the cable car saves the climb if the altitude tells on you. Sleep Urumqi or Karamay.

  • Day 1: Urumqi, car and documents
  • Day 2: Tianchi ~70 km, ~1,900 m
  • Book Tianchi ahead; cable car optional

Days 3-4: Karamay, Urho and Burqin

Day 3 runs the G3014 to Karamay, then southwest to the Urho Ghost City, the wind-carved yardang landforms, about 100 km of easy road, worth a late-afternoon light. Day 4 pushes north on the G217 about 400 km to Burqin, the gateway town to Kanas, a long but straight drive through the Dzungarian plain. The Burqin Kanas itinerary begins here; arrive with daylight to eat the famous Burqin grilled fish by the river. Fuel up in Karamay, the next reliable stop is far.

  • Day 3: Karamay + Urho Ghost City ~100 km
  • Day 4: G217 ~400 km to Burqin
  • Fuel in Karamay; Burqin fish at dusk

Days 5-6: Kanas and Hemu

Day 5 enters Kanas scenic area, the glacier lake at ~1,370 m ringed by taiga, with boardwalks and a boat. Day 6 loops to Hemu, the wooden village of the Tuva people, arguably the prettiest morning light in Xinjiang, then back toward Burqin. The Burqin Kanas itinerary is the heart of this loop and the reason for the eight days; do not rush it into one. Book lodging inside or just outside the park months ahead, July and August sell out. Nights are cold even in summer, pack the layer.

  • Day 5: Kanas lake ~1,370 m, boardwalks
  • Day 6: Hemu Tuva village, best morning light
  • Book park lodging months ahead; cold nights

Days 7-8: Sayram, Yining and home

Day 7 is the long transfer, Burqin to Sayram Lake about 500 km via the G3014 and G30, arrive for the cobalt evening water at 2,070 m. Day 8 dips into the Ili Valley, Yining and its lavender in season, then the haul east on the G30 back to Urumqi, roughly 700 km, a full day, or fly home from Yining’s airport to skip it. The 14-day Xinjiang grand loop extends this with the south; for eight days, north is the cleaner story. End where the landscapes earned the drive.

  • Day 7: ~500 km to Sayram, 2,070 m
  • Day 8: Ili Valley then ~700 km G30 home
  • Or fly from Yining to skip the return

Driving notes and the buffer

The G217 north of Burqin is good but remote, fuel and signal thin, so top up and download offline maps. Altitude is modest except the passes, but long days add up, so break the return with a night rather than grinding it. This loop stacks well with the Ili Valley itinerary if you steal two more days, or trim to the 7 day route if you must. Keep a packing list for cold nights and a full tank leaving Karamay and Burqin, the gaps are real.

  • G217 remote; top up fuel, offline maps
  • Break the return; do not grind 700 km
  • Full tank leaving Karamay and Burqin
