Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) is the easiest alpine showpiece in Xinjiang — a glacial lake at 1,900 m beneath the snowy Bogda Peak, just 70 km from Urumqi. It is the perfect first or last stop on a Xinjiang road trip itinerary. Here is the practical visitor guide.
Getting There by Car
- From Urumqi, drive east ~1.5 hours to the Tianchi scenic-area gate.
- Private cars park at the lower lot; a shuttle bus climbs to the lake shore (mandatory).
- The gate-to-lake bus takes ~30–40 minutes through pine forest.
Tickets & Shuttles
- Entry + shuttle is priced per the scenic area (budget it in your road trip budget).
- Boats and cable cars are optional extras; the lakeside walk is free once inside.
What to Do
- Lakeside loop walk: Flat, scenic, with Bogda Peak reflections.
- Boat ride: Cross to the far shore for quieter views.
- Cable car to higher viewpoints: For panoramas if time allows.
Best Time & Light
Late spring to autumn is best; summer wildflowers ring the shore. Mornings are calm and reflective. Winter freezes the lake but is spectacular — see our winter road trip guide.
