Sayram Lake: The Last Tear of the Atlantic

Sayram Lake — locals poetically call it “the last tear of the Atlantic” — is the largest and highest alpine lake in Xinjiang, cradled by the Tianshan at about 2,070 m. On a northern Xinjiang road trip loop it is the first “wow” after leaving the plains, and the Sayram Lake ring road is one of the most relaxing drives in the province.

Getting there

  • From Urumqi: ~540 km via the G30 Expressway to the lake’s eastern shore.
  • From Yining: ~90 km; the Yizhao Highway connects the two with spectacular switchbacks.
  • A paved ring road circles the entire lake (about 90 km) — perfect for a slow, photo-stopped half-day.

What makes it special

Sayram sits in a rain shadow, so it is often windy and cool, with intensely blue water and snow-dusted peaks behind. In Xinjiang in summer the surrounding grasslands turn emerald and wildflowers carpet the shores; in winter the lake freezes into a sheet of ice with “ice bubbles” prized by photographers.

Best photo spots

  • Eastern causeway: the classic wide shot with the highway curving along the shore.
  • Southern bays: calmer water and reflections at sunset.
  • Lighthouse / viewing points on the ring road (signposted).
  • Yurts on the west side, where herders welcome visitors in season.

Activities

  • Ring-road drive: budget 2–4 hours with stops.
  • Cycling: rentals at the gate in summer.
  • Yurt stay: available June–September for a night under the stars.
  • Birdwatching: migratory waterbirds in spring and autumn.

When to go

The lake is accessible most of the warm season. The best time for a Xinjiang road trip (June–October) covers it; July–August is lush, September crisp and golden. Winter access depends on snow clearing.

Practical tips

  • Wind is strong — bring a jacket even in summer.
  • Entrance fee + ring-road toll apply; check the latest price.
  • Combine with Yining and the lavender fields for a two-day Ili mini-loop.
  • Fuel and food are at the gate; the ring road itself has limited services.

FAQ

Can I drive the full ring road? Yes, it is paved and open in season.

Final word

Sayram is the kind of place that resets your sense of scale. Circle it slowly, let the wind do its thing, and you will understand the “tear of the Atlantic” line.
