If you have 7–10 days and want the most beautiful driving in the province, build your northern xinjiang road trip loop. This arc packs glacial lakes, fairy-tale wooden villages, and flower-strewn grasslands into one manageable circuit — and it is the easiest part of Xinjiang for first-time foreign self-drivers.
The loop (about 1,600 km)
| Stage | Route | Drive | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Urumqi → Kanas | 700 km | Kanas / Jiadengyu |
| 2 | Kanas → Hemu | 60 km | Hemu |
| 3 | Hemu → Burqin → Urho | 400 km | Urho |
| 4 | Urho → Sayram (via Ürümqi bypass) | 550 km | Sayram |
| 5 | Sayram → Yining (Yizhao Hwy) | 200 km | Yining |
| 6 | Yining → Nalati → Bayinbuluke | 330 km | Bayinbuluke |
| 7 | Bayinbuluke → Duku → Kuqa | 360 km | Kuqa |
Stage highlights
Kanas & Hemu. The Kanas Lake guide covers the emerald lake and its “water monster” legend; nearby Hemu Village is famous for morning mist over wooden huts. Both sit inside a protected scenic area — buy the joint ticket, and note private cars may be parked at the gate with shuttle transfer inside in peak season.
Sayram Lake. The Sayram Lake ring road is a highlight: 90 km of shoreline with pull-offs for every angle. The Yizhao Highway from Sayram to Yining is short but stunning — a vertical stairway of switchbacks.

Nalati & Bayinbuluke. Ili’s grasslands are the green heart of the north. End the loop by driving the Duku Highway south to Kuqa, or loop back to Urumqi if you skip the south.
Best time
This loop is at its peak from June to early October. September–October brings golden birch around Kanas; June–July brings lavender and green meadows. See our full best time for a Xinjiang road trip guide.
Practical notes
- Distances are long; keep daily drives under 500 km where possible.
- Fuel and food are easy in towns; remote passes need a full tank.
- The Kanas area restricts private cars in peak season — check before you go.
- Border permits are not needed for this loop (only the Pamir to the south does).
FAQ
How many days minimum? 7 for a fast version, 10 for a relaxed one.
Can I do it in a sedan? Yes — all roads on this loop are paved. An SUV is more comfortable.

Is it crowded? July–August and October holidays are busy; June and September are calmer.
Final word
The northern loop is Xinjiang’s greatest hits on one tank-to-tank circuit. Start in Urumqi, chase the lakes north, then ride the Duku south.
