Best Hotels & Guesthouses Inside Kashgar Old Town

The lanes of Kashgar’s old town are so narrow my SUV needed three backing turns to escape — where you sleep there decides your next morning’s mood and your luggage’s fate.

Kashgar (about 1,280 m) is the hub of Southern Xinjiang driving and the last supply city before the Karakul Lake, Tashkurgan and the Karakoram Highway. Staying inside the renovated old town versus a modern hotel outside is two completely different experiences: one opens onto a grape-arbour courtyard, the other onto an elevator lobby. The choice ripples into your whole Pamir plan, because the old town is where you sort permits, meet drivers and feel the Silk Road in a way no highway hotel delivers.

Inside the old town: a century-old mud-brick lane

After the 2010 seismic upgrade, the old town gained timber framing and plumbing while keeping its earthen yellow walls. I recommend courtyard guesthouses along Wusitangboyi Road — step out into a grape arbour, five minutes’ walk to Id Kah Mosque, and at night you hear the dutar from the tea houses. The catch: cars can’t enter the lanes, so you unload at the perimeter lot and the owner usually sends someone to help — a big deal if you travel with heavy bags. The reward is authenticity: the smell of baking nan, the call to prayer, the cool of a mud wall at dusk. I’ve stayed in three courtyards on that lane and the best had a roof terrace where the whole town’s rooftops glow at sunset. Book a room off the main lane if you’re a light sleeper; the tea-house side gets lively until midnight.

Outside the old town: modern hotels and parking

Four-star properties along Renmin West Road and by the Kizil River have wide parking that fits a motorhome, ideal if you roll out the next morning onto the Karakoram Highway. Expect about 20% more than a courtyard room, but stable water pressure, soundproofing and AC — friendlier for families with older travellers. I take my parents outside, go solo inside. The trade is atmosphere for convenience: you lose the lane but gain a guaranteed hot shower and a parking spot you can find at 6 a.m. in the dark. For a Pamir push, that matters — you don’t want to be hunting a lost car before a 300 km mountain drive. Several of these hotels also keep a simple garage, which is gold when overnight lows drop.

The night before Tashkurgan

If you’re driving to Tashkurgan (3,100 m) the next day, spend one night acclimatising in Kashgar rather than climbing straight from the plains. Old-town guesthouses sit at 1,200–1,400 m — a good buffer. Sort your border permit in Kashgar before leaving; most courtyard owners know the nearest office and will point you there. I learned this the hard way on a first trip when I rushed the Pamir and spent a rough first night in Tashkurgan. Now I treat Kashgar as a staging night: permit in hand, fuel topped, tyres checked, early night. The border permit office keeps daytime hours, so don’t arrive late expecting to sort it — get it done the afternoon you reach town.

Around Corban and National Day rooms vanish — book at least 10 days ahead, and the popular courtyards far earlier. Sunday bazaar day is crowded; for quiet, pick the far bank of the Kizil. Prices are soft in winter (Nov–Mar) when the whole south is quiet and you can walk in, but the trade is cold rooms and fewer open restaurants. I mark Corban and National Day on my calendar the year before and book the moment the calendar opens — the best courtyards are gone within days. If you’re flexible, shift your Kashgar night to a weekday and the same room drops 15%.

How to avoid a dud

Read reviews for ‘pickup on time’, ‘strong AC’ and ‘quiet at night’, not just ‘pretty’. A tea-house-next-door courtyard is lively but hard on light sleepers; a deep-lane room is quiet but a navigation puzzle. Ask the owner for a short video of the location — more reliable than photos. I’ve been burned by a ‘courtyard’ that was a thin-walled box over a kitchen; the video would have shown the exhaust fan by the bed. Also confirm whether breakfast is real (eggs, tea, nan) or just a coupon to a nearby shop that may be closed. For the old town, the single best filter is whether the owner answers WeChat quickly — that’s who will rescue your luggage from the perimeter lot.

Eating and evening in the old town

Staying in the old town means dinner is a three-minute walk to hand-pulled laghman, samsa hot from the tandoor and skewers smoked over apricot wood. The night market by the Id Kah lights up after sunset and winds down near midnight. I plan my Kashgar night around it: early permit errand, late lunch, then a slow walk through the lanes grazing from stall to stall. Outside hotels have restaurants but you’ll taxi in for the atmosphere. If you want both, book inside for one night and outside for the next — a nice split that gives you the lane experience without two rough sleeps. Either way, carry small cash; some stalls don’t take phone pay reliably.
